Combatting Halitosis

Every day millions of people use toothpaste, mints and mouthwash to help control the everyday problem of bad breath (halitosis).  Many do not realize that bad breath can usually be cured very easily with good dental hygiene.

Food will cause bad breath when it is broken down in the mouth and around the teeth.  Once certain foods are ingested, like onions, garlic and spices, the oils are absorbed into the lungs and cause persistent bad breath until the food is passed from the body.

Poor dental hygiene is the number one cause of bad breath.  Brushing twice a day and flossing at least once will remove all the food particles from your mouth that can cause bad breath.  Dental hygiene is important to remove the plaque from the teeth.  Bacteria is the primary component of plaque, which in turn can cause bad breath.

Using mouthwash to relieve odor is a temporary solution for those with bad breath.  The odors are not usually in the mouth, but are in the lungs.  Mouthwash will tend to just cover up the odor.  However, if mouthwash is used, it should be rinsed in your mouth for at least 30 seconds for it to do its job.

Some other causes of bad breath are:

  • Dry mouth

  • Throat irritation

  • Tobacco products

  • Severe dieting
